How can we increase access to healthy and sustainable food for every citizen?

A challenge from Openlab's podcast Matlaboratoriet. How can the city's food scene - restaurants, bars, cafés, and grocery stores - support equity and narrow the socioeconomic gaps? Share your ideas! Chosen ideas will be discussed at a meetup with experts from Matlaboratoriet.

Access to healthy and sustainable food for everyone

Rapid urbanization creates cities where we eat, sleep, work and produce all at the same place. When living closer to each other, it demands that we reach out to our neighbors, collaborate and start a conversation around what kind of living and working space we want to have. How can we learn from each other? How can the food scene in the form of restaurants, bars, cafés, and grocery stores support equity and narrow the socioeconomic gaps? We want your ideas on how to develop a city where individuals can lead healthy and sustainable lives and where communities can thrive.

How can we plan new areas of the city so we ensure access to sustainable and healthy food for every citizen? In the seventh episode of Openlab’s food podcast Matlaboratoriet we explore the possibilities to increase equity in the city through urban planning tools with the focus on food. In a conversation with former city architect of Stockholm Karolina Keyzer, founder of FARM Restaurant and Bar and Stockholm Brewing Co. Niklas Jakobson and researcher in public health at Stockholm University Karl Gauffin we dive deeper into this topic. This mixed-use city blends residential, commercial, cultural, institutional, or entertainment uses, where those functions are physically and functionally integrated. With this development, conflict can arise with new sounds, smells, and noises being part of everyday life. As individualistic urban citizens it challenges us to create our community together with our neighbors. Ways to activate your community can be to start an urban garden, find communal spaces to cook food together, teach each other to cook tasty, healthy and planet-friendly food from scratch, reach out to politicians and leave a citizen initiative or try to influence food producers. Opportunities are endless. How can you contribute to your community or influence politicians and corporations? Leave your ideas below.
