This challenge is inspired by the third section of Openlabs podcast MATLABORATORY - about food, science and society. Section three deals with how we stay healthy longer and experts in different areas share their perspectives and insights.
# 3 Want to live longer? | Food lab on acast

We live longer and longer. Not since the 1960s, longevity has increased as fast as today. Some even claim that those who are born today could live for 250 years.

While we are getting older, many people suffer from diseases such as cancer, alzheimer's and cardiovascular diseases, when they get higher up in the ages. Therefore, the fact that we get older means that we can be sick longer, if we do not find ways to also, at the same time, keep us healthy and healthy even when we are old.

In demography and public health, apart from the average life expectancy or life expectancy at birth, one speaks of the expected number of healthy years at birth (healty life years expectancy at birth). If our longevity increases, without increasing the number of healthy years, this not only means personal suffering but also high social costs for the elderly and the elderly.

Different diets and theories about what we eat and how we move for healthier lives further up in the ages have become increasingly talked about in recent years. Concepts such as nudging have also emerged, that is, to encourage or "control" people's behavior by simplifying things, for example. healthy choices.

So how do we proceed to extend the time we are healthy, even when we are old, by how we eat, live and move us?

Vi lever längre och längre. Inte sedan 60-talet har livslängden ökat så snabbt som idag. Vissa hävdar till och med att de som föds idag skulle kunna leva i 250 år.

Samtidigt som vi blir allt äldre drabbas många av sjukdomar som cancer, alzheimers och hjärt- & kärlsjukdomar, när de kommer högre upp i åldrarna. Att vi blir äldre betyder alltså därför också att vi kan vara sjuka längre, om vi inte hittar sätt att också, samtidigt, hålla oss friska och sunda även när vi blir gamla.

Inom demografi och folkhälsa pratar man, förutom medellivslängd eller förväntad livslängd vid födseln, även om förväntat antal hälsosamma år vid födelsen (healty life years expectancy at birth). Om vår livslängd ökar, utan att antalet hälsosamma år ökar, innebär det inte bara personligt lidande utan även höga samhällskostnader för sjuk- och äldrevården.

Olika dieter och teorier om såväl vad vi äter och hur vi rör oss för friskare liv längre upp i åldrarna har blivit allt mer omtalade på senare år. Begrepp som nudging har också dykt upp, alltså att uppmuntra eller ”styra” människors beteende genom att förenkla att göra t.ex. hälsosamma val.

Så hur går vi till väga för att förlänga den tid vi är friska, även när vi blir gamla, genom hur vi äter, lever och rör oss?

Togetherness, knowledge, movement and something good to eat

Combine shorter walks, with different focus, which ends with joint eating something healthy. The walks go to cultivation areas and in close forests to be able to pick along mushrooms, berries or other grown. Knowledgeable companions can tell you what you are looking for and then you can cook together and eat a healthy meal. Then diet and exercise are combined with knowledge and coexistence.
